50 Years of Marriage - Wedding Anniversary Gifts and Ideas by the Year!
"True Meaning of Marriage"
The true meaning of marriage is love. By love, I mean not just what we feel but what we do. Love just as a feeling is very flimsy, an up and down roller coaster - Love is an action! In order for it to become the ultimate force and for us to rediscover the true meaning of marriage, love has to be unconditional. You are not looking for acceptance or validation. You are giving of yourself to another not because of them, but because of your values
The true meaning of marriage is expressing love unconditionally to another. It is an unstoppable force that can endure anything. How do you find it? You have to draw strength from you, neither seeking validation nor acceptance, just seeking the opportunity to show love.
A marriage should be celebrated every day and even more so when you reach certain milestones. The names of some anniversaries provide guidance for appropriate ways to celebrate or traditional gifts for married couples to give to each other; if there is a party these can be brought by the guests or influence the theme or decoration too.
These gifts can vary in different countries, but some years have well-established connections now common to most nations: 1st Paper, 5th Wooden, 10th Tin, 15th Crystal, 20th China, 25th Silver, 30th Pearl, 40th Ruby, 50th Golden, 60th Diamond.
The tradition may have originated in medieval Germany where, if a married couple lived to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their wedding, the wife was presented by her friends and neighbours with a silver wreath to congratulate them for the good fortune that had prolonged the lives of the couple for so many years. On celebration of the 50th anniversary, the wife received a wreath of gold. Over time the number of symbols expanded and the German tradition came to assign gifts that had direct connections with each stage of married life. These symbols have also changed over time - For example in the United Kingdom, diamond was a well-known symbol for the 75th anniversary, but this changed to the now more common 60th anniversary after Queen Victoria's 60 years on the throne was widely marked as her Diamond Jubilee.
Traditional Symbols and Gifts By Year...
For a first anniversary a gift of paper should be given, this symbolises the strength that comes from an interlaced connection of the paper's individual threads. It is also tradition to eat the top layer of your wedding cake on this date.
Your gift doesn't have to be expensive; you could get your husband/wife a journal or scrap book to record memories of your anniversary or stick photographs from events over the last year. Or you could write a love letter and sneak it into a lunch box or work bag or for a bit of fun make a paper trail around your house, each clue could lead to the next and then finally to some printed tickets to a show or the cinema. Why not decorate your romantic dinner table with some homemade paper flowers and use doyleys as your table mats, be sure to be careful if you are lighting candles with all that paper around!
Some other great ideas might be postcards, a calendar, magazine subscription, jigsaw puzzle, a special book or a map (maybe somewhere you have been or would like to plan a trip to together)!
A fifth wedding anniversary gift of wood should be given to celebrate this milestone, wood is strong and long-lasting and should be symbolic of the strength your marriage has.
You could plant a tree together, in your garden or perhaps at a park or church that is special to you both. Choose a plant or tree that means something to you, perhaps an evergreen or a flaming red maple - something that particularly represents your love for each other. You could have a romantic dinner and eat your meal out of wooden baskets and drink from wooden chalices. Wood can be easily and elegantly engraved or sculpted into romantic shapes and figures - perhaps a personally engraved plaque with your names and the date or of your house name or a family welcome sign.
The first major milestone - a tenth year of marriage should be celebrated with a gift of tin or aluminium; this gift will reflect the strength and beauty of the connection between the couple which after 10 years will have learnt to work together - a relationship that is flexible yet durable, can be bent without being broken.
Consider a keepsake gift made from either material such as a picture frame or a garden decoration - the style that you choose will of course be dependent on the hobbies or personality of the couple.
Perhaps some artistic jewellery that combines the traditional material with a diamond for your wife - or a blue Sapphire is the alternate modern gemstone for a 10th anniversary. You might even find a tin box that you could give; you could include a CD of songs from the year you were married or a special photograph.
Fifteenth anniversaries should be marked by the giving of a crystal or a crystal themed gift; this represents the clear and sparkling love between two people.
A modern gift idea of a watch symbolises the time spent together with a 'watch crystal' referring to its transparent glass face. A beautiful crystal vase with some flowers, a stemware wine glass or champagne flute will make a perfect gift that can be treasured. You could add a touch of humour and get a crystal ball to help you see into the future.
You could have a romantic dinner for two, choose a simple table cloth and some crystal candle holders, remember the colours that you had at your wedding for some 'brownie points' and even a similar flower arrangement for that extra special touch.
Reaching a 20th year of marriage is a massive achievement and should be celebrated by reflecting on the commitment made. The symbol for this milestone is to give a gift of china as this signifies how elegant and delicate love can be.
Plan a cute picnic in the park using china plates and cups that you picked up from the opportunity shop, or you could invite friends and family along and make a party of it, after 20 years you certainly have the right to celebrate.
Use Chinese lanterns as part of your decoration or head down to china town for a Chinese meal and a night out, it is quite likely that your rice or noodles will be served in an authentic china bowl.
Some nice gift ideas would be a Wedgewood china vase or cake plate, or you could buy any small gift or tickets to an event and present it in a china cup or bowl.
Thirtieth wedding anniversaries also known as a pearl anniversary should be considered very highly by friends & family members as this is a wonderful accomplishment. Symbolic of a hard exterior and soft inner the pearl is the perfect gift to represent a marriage that has lasted as long as 30 years.
A gift for the lady would be a set of beautiful pearl earrings, a necklace or bracelet. There are several types of pearl to consider classic white, black Tahitian or delicate pink - after 30 year a husband should know which will be most suitable. Perhaps a mother of pearl bowl or vase or simply choose another gift and incorporate an image of a pearl into the design and decoration.
If you are planning something really special you could arrange a trip to an exotic location that has pearling in its history, such as Broome, WA. If your wedding date falls between April/May and September/October then this is the perfect time, it will be during the dry season - warm days, blue skies, and lots of clean beach. It is a multicultural place with the pearl industry attracting settlers from all over the world.
A fortieth or ruby wedding anniversary is a very special one. Rubies are thought to hold an eternal inner flame, a perfect symbol to reflect that a 40 year long marriage is still alive and strong!
If you are planning a party make sure that you include Ruby coloured decorations and party favours, if you are having speeches and a toast then you should ask for this to be made with ruby red wine appose to the traditional champagne.
For a more casual affair, perhaps a picnic in the park, choose ruby red plastic cups and plates to decorate and choose red grape juice as your soft choice alongside red wine. Whichever location or style of celebration you choose you can be sure to reflect the ruby red in all of your decorations, invitations, gifts and party favors.
The golden anniversary for the 50th year is one of the most deservedly celebrated, this half a century milestone is a fantastic statement!
Gold all the way for this event, decorate your party venue with gold glitter, golden flowers and centrepieces, balloons, candles etc
If you are in the US and know a couple who is celebrating 50 years or more of marriage, or who was just been married, you can have an anniversary greeting or wedding congratulations sent to them from the White House.
In Australia you could plan a trip to the Gold Coast or to a Gold mine - Sovereign Hill in Ballarat, VIC would be perfect! Take a trip to the museum and experience a golden adventure.
A great gift for this anniversary would be a large album filled with photographs and memories throughout 50 years of marriage, start with the wedding and include major events and family gatherings - you could even organise a guest book for people to sign and write messages of congratulations.
Whether you are celebrating your first or fiftieth wedding milestone I hope that this article helps you with gift ideas and planning your event. Congratulations!

How To Build A Patio Cover
If willing to experiment and build a Patio Cover, hammer out questions as to why you need a Patio Cover, for what purpose, whether it would be painted or made with wood, prefabricated aluminum or PVC, and if permission is required from state or city authorities. Remember that a patio is an extension of the house, generally not more than 12 feet and single-storied. The patio can be fully covered or have no cover. No special skills are required for building a Patio Cover except co-coordinating your patience, dimension of area, number of wood or aluminum panels and material required.
Begin with the necessary spade work according to weather conditions, area and usage of patio. The next step is selecting material from a comprehensive range, including polycarb panels for high summer or winter temperatures, vinyl opaque all weather conditions, vinyl translucent and clear panels suitable for use in milder weather conditions, aluminum pan roof that is cool, durable and requiring little maintenance, or insulated foam panels providing insulation for a strong low-maintenance roof. The panels should fit and install easily, and offer design flexibility. Check if the gutter system is accessible for cleaning whether it is w-pan gutter, roll form gutter or extruded gutter and valance.
For that professional Patio Cover you would need appropriate tools; you can order a complete tool kit or purchase one. The tools required would be a 3/8"" drill bit, hack saw or electric jig saw with fine-toothed blade for metal, a caulking gun, measuring tape, screwdriver, hammer, metal snips, socket and shank, crescent wrench, level, carpenter's square, ladders, heavy duty pencils, masonry and nuts and bolts. If the patio is attached to the house then the existing support system will help cover to fit easily. For a free-standing patio the cover will have to be fitted on all four sides, depending on shape. The building instructions will guide you step by step.

How To Cut Laminate Flooring - A DIY Guide
Laminate flooring is known for being a great project for homeowners that love to work on home improvement themselves. If you are a DIY lover, you will appreciate knowing how to cut laminate flooring. Flooring installation can become a time-consuming process, but when you take the time to understand what you will be doing; the process will be much simpler.
Before you begin the process of cutting your wood floor laminate, round up all of the necessary tools. Try to have all six handy tools before you begin the installation, this way, your DIY project will go much smoother.
Measuring Tape
Dry erasable marker
Reversed jigsaw blade with teeth pointing down
Bucket
Undercut Saw to undercut door jambs (vibratory undercut saw)
Tapping Block and Pull Bar (optional)
Use dark-colored, dry erasable marker when measuring and fitting your planks. Marker is more visible than pencil, plus all marks made with it are so easy to remove- this way you can work stress free and just wipe out wrong marks if needed.
Never cut your laminate wood floor in the room where you install it. When wood dust gets stuck in the flooring locking system you may have problems to lock planks together during the installation.
You can cut laminate flooring with table saw, but in my opinion the cleanest and easiest option is using a jigsaw blade with teeth pointing down. Use it together with an old 5 gallon bucket and cut the flooring right over it, this way the saw dust will fall into the bucket- no mess equals easy clean up. One more benefit of using jigsaw- there will be no chipping on the top surface.
Hint: Cut scrap pieces of laminate to use as spacers for installation.
Door jambs, trim, and heating vents can add to the challenge of cutting laminate flooring. It might be necessary to trim door jambs/trim so that the flooring will fit under the door. It is very easy to tell, when floor installation is done by a pro. You can do it too- simply, never use caulk to hide your mistakes and take your time to do it right! Cutting the trim and jambs can be done fast and easy, by using an undercut saw with a rotary electric motor that drives a flat, circular saw blade in a horizontal setup.
You can find a good quality undercutting saw in your local hardware store starting around .
By educating yourself and having the proper tools nearby, your DIY Project will be a smooth one.

You Can Build Your Own Circular Saw Table
Since circular saws are the portable version of a table saw, they are not meant to be fixed to a table. However, the portability can be a disadvantage if you are trying to make precision cuts such as miters or other angles. To help you make more accurate cuts, you can build a circular saw table in your own shop.
Step 1
Gather your materials which include a 3/4" thick medium density overlay (MDO) in a 36"X16" sheet, a 36"X8 1/2" piece, a 36"X1" piece, and two 36"X1 1/2 " pieces, a pencil, ruler, jigsaw, eight strips of 1"X2" wood, nails, hammer, drill, 1/4" and 1/2" drill bits, screws, circular saw, 1/2" dowel, speed square, and 1/4" carriage bolt.
Step 2
Mark the midpoint 3/4" in from the edge on the long side of the 36"X16" MDO.
Step 3
Using the ruler, mark a radius from this midpoint on that front edge. Next, draw a straight line 10 inches from and parallel to the back edge.
Step 4
To cut out the table that you just marked, use the jigsaw to cut down the 10" line, around the radius, and down the 10" line on the other side. You now have the shape of the table.
Step 5
Flipping the table to its back, nail six strips of the 1"X2" wood to all of the straight edges as the support for the table.
Step 6
Go back to the original midpoint mark on the topside and drill a 1/2" hole in which the dowel will be placed to serve as the pivot for the arm.
Step 7
Down from the hole on this topside, attach two more 1"X2" strips 10 inches long to serve as the fence for the guide.
Step 8
Take the two pieces of MDO that are 36"X1 1/2" and cut a 45-degree angle off of each end. With the angles facing inward, screw these two pieces onto the ends of the 36"X8 1/2" piece of MDO. This makes the carriage with spacers.
Step 9
Screw the 36"X1 1/2" MDO to the edge of the 36"X4" MDO at a 90-degree angle to create a guide lip. Attach this assembly to the support blocks of the carriage with screws. To make the opposite side of the guide, screw the 36"X2" MDO to the other side of the carriage. The circular saw's blade should pass through the gap as it follows the guide lip, but you may need to adjust the gap width for your particular saw.
Step 10
Now, with the saw against the guide lip and the blade in the gap, fix an opposite lip to keep the saw straight as it passing through the carriage by screwing on a 36"X1" strip of MDO on the opposite side.
Step 11
Flip this carriage over and measure down 7 inches from the top edge. Mark the midpoint of the width at this point and drill a 1/2" hole for the dowel.
Step 12
Removing the upper part of the carriage, place the base under the table and tap the 1/2" dowel through both the table and carriage, not allowing the dowel to stick out past the carriage blocks. Then, reattach the upper part of the carriage.
Step 13
Slide the carriage arm as far right as possible. Putting the speed square between the arm and the fence at a 45-degree angle, drill a 1/4" hole through the upper assembly and tabletop to secure the arm with a carriage bolt. Do the same at the 90-degree and 45-degree left angle to make repeated angle cuts.
Your circular saw table is ready to use. Place the wood to be cut against the fence. Line up the arm to the angle that you want. Put the circular saw in the guide arm with a depth set so that you will only cut 1/8" into the table. Make your cut. You can now make accurate angle cuts time after time with your circular saw table.

As Seen on TV Kreg Jig Review
For the woodworker, nothing is easier than pocket hole joinery using the Kreg Jig K3 System. Since the debut of this system in 1990, the Kreg jig has been the choice for affordable and easy to use pocket hole joinery.
What is pocket hole joinery? The simplest process, all it involves is drilling a clearance hole that is angled and a counterbore in wood. Using another piece of wood, the first one is attached to the second one with a screw. The bottom (the pocket hole) of the counterbore is back far enough from the edge to which it is being joined to allow room for the screw head. The clearance hole sets the screw at an angle so it can hold the wood without popping through.
When it comes to the best pocket holes you will do no better than the Kreg K3 System. The jig is a versatile tool which includes these features:
* You no longer have to reach around to clamp, which is awkward. The clamp is on the front side which is much easier to reach.
* When you need the pocket holes in a specific place, the drill bit guide has three fixed holes for guiding and placing them for narrow, wide and widest.
* The dust collection shroud is a new feature that eliminates the wood chips falling all over the workbench and will make the drill bit last longer.
With added height adjustment, the K3 allows screws to enter material from ½ inch to 1 ½ inches thick. The innovative material support stop will place the pocket holes in alignment on all the pieces you are working on so you have the best pocket hole drilling available.
The system includes a portable base, drill guide block, material support stop, 3/8 inch step drill bit, Allen wrench, dust collection shroud, premium face clamp, depth collar, screws, a carrying case and instructions.
The most uncomplicated way of joining materials perfectly and with the accuracy needed so that the parts of the joint line up precisely are accomplished by the Kreg Jig K3 System. Instead of a set-up that you do not understand or having to measure, and dry fit joint the whole thing can be taken care of in just a few minutes. This is as simple as using a drill.
The Kreg Jig K3 System has a portable case for taking along wherever you need to work or for storing when it is not in use. With more features than any other hole tool sold today, the system is preferred by those working in cabinet making, picture frames, decks, stairs, windows and door jambs and attaching leg rails to perfection. The sky is the limit when it comes to the uses for this jig.
When it comes to strength, independent testing that has been done shows a remarkable difference between using this jig and the old way of using a mortise and tenon joint. The pocket screw joint when subjected to a shear load failed at 707 pounds and the mortise and tenon joint failed at 453 pounds. For a 35% stronger pocket screw joint, the Kreg Jig K3 System clearly came out the winner.

Jigsaw - An Indispensable Power Tool
If you are just beginning to build your power tool collection, a jigsaw is the first saw you should buy. A jigsaw, formerly called a scroll saw, is a good all purpose saw because it can make both straight cuts as well as curved cuts for a stenciled design or custom shape.
It should, however, be noted that cutting very precise and exactly straight lines can be difficult for a jigsaw even when using a guide (a better option for exact cuts would be a circular saw or a table saw.) This power tool is typically hand held and easy to use because it is generally lightweight.
A jigsaw is usually found as a corded model, although it is possible to find a battery operated one. A feature of virtually all models is interchangeable blades. Jigsaws are generally used to cut through wood and other similar materials, but different materials can be cut using specific blades.
The blades do have a tendency to bend when used to cut thicker materials or when used to cut designs with very sharp curves. But that isn't too much of a problem because they are relatively inexpensive to replace. Jigsaws excel at sawing through thin materials but can cut pieces that are up to one and a half inches thick. But beware of overheating a jigsaw or forcing the saw forward to quickly while cutting thick pieces.
It is also important to note that the reciprocating blade is pulled upward and so all materials to be cut ought to be placed finished side face down to avoid chips in the surface. Generally all jigsaw models also feature a bevel function which allows the blade to cut angles up to forty-five degrees relative to the vertical position for miter joints.
Prices of jigsaws vary but can be found for as low as forty dollars. They are relatively inexpensive when compared with other power tools and saws, but yet jigsaws are often the most helpful tools in the shed. The prices increase with better brands, higher quality, more powerful models, longer warranties, and additional features.
Some of the common features found in most jigsaws include a variable speed option, a quick release for fast and easy changing of blades, and a tool free bevel adjustment function. Other jigsaws offer a dust collection mechanism and a blade storage compartment on the power tool itself. When you finally do purchase your first jigsaw, make sure that you protect your investment by storing it in the specified case and in a safe place. It is also important to keep it clean and well maintained.
When using the jigsaw always wear goggles or protective eye wear and it may be wise to wear protective gloves as well. Don't try to cut material greater than an inch and half thick as the results may be less than satisfactory and you may damage your new power tool. Also, go slowly when making cuts to ensure your safety and the exactness of your cuts.

How to Prevent to Tearout on a Table Saw
One of the major factors that separates a good piece of woodworking from a mediocre one, is how cleanly it has been constructed. Nothing will destroy the look of a finished piece of furniture more than tearout. The rough edges can be avoided if you pay attention to how would fibres can react to different types of cutting.
On the table saw, tearout occurs mostly when the blade exits the stock and breaks the wood fibres when it should be cutting them. As a result of this breakage, splinters will show up on the underneath, the back corner, and the back edge of your piece of timber. This damage is most obvious when crosscutting a piece of timber rather than ripping one. However, tearout is easy to eliminate.
It is vitally important that the blade you are using is sharp and clean, a dull blade, or one that has clogged teeth, will consistently produce poor quality cuts. If you are crosscutting a piece of timber make sure that you were using the correct crosscutting blade, as these blades have staggered teeth which score the fibres before cutting through the stock.
The height of the blade can also be an issue. For safety reasons the blade should project above the surface of timber about the height of one of the teeth. However, a low blade can lift the fibres away from the timber resulting in tearout. If you raise the blade slightly higher than that normally recommended it forces the saw to press the fibres into the surface which results in a cleaner cut.
The table saw in search which surrounds the blade slot can also cause tearout if it is too wide. If there is too much began around the blade it creates an unsupported surface for the timber you are cutting. You should purchase or construct a zero tolerance insert to ensure that timber is fully supported as it passes across the blade.
